What makes cricket so good?
It’s a game played by young and old, rich and poor, across ethnic, national, religious and cultural boundaries, levels of education and personality types.
It rewards persistence, resilience and delayed gratification. You have to invest in engaging with the sport to get anything out of it (as player or spectator).
It rewards people who can change a match very quickly, by smashing sixes out of the ground and sending stumps cartwheeling. It also rewards discipline and determination.
It’s a game that rewards innovation and the mavericks, yet is steeped in heritage. It’s a game that requires thought, tactics, and managing long term goals; yet also rewards playing on instinct and feel.
It’s a game where a cohesive, close knit team most often succeeds, and where the best captains are the best servants.
It’s a game that has the ‘spirit of cricket’ written into its law book – showing it’s about more than simply winning. It’s best played when the sun is shining and the grass is freshly cut.
Its a game that can provide the most epic tension, by the barest of margins, and it can be pretty dull too.
It’s a game that rewards continuous learning, and a knowledge that there’s always more to learn.
And it’s a game that accommodates pontificating people like me.
Thank you cricket.
